Jesus said, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled,” (Matthew 5:6). The natural person feels neither hunger nor thirst for righteousness. But to those who do experience this hunger and thirst a solemn promise is made: “they shall be filled.”

Have you understood what Jesus said about your sins? He said “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh,” (Matthew 12:34). The prophet said, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Have you seen that evil dwells within you? Paul saw that and wrote: “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing,” (Romans 7:18). Sinful acts come from a corrupt sinful heart!

If you are content with your sinful condition you will remain in it. You are neither hungry or thirsty for righteousness. You have no interest in Christ or His sacrifice for sins. You may be religious, but you will not come to Christ. It is this unwillingness of yours that is a part of your problem. Jesus spoke of those who searched the Scriptures, but their interest was only in religion. He said, “And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life,” (John 5:40). Their will was not to come to Him.

Consider these two statements from the Lord Jesus: “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst,” (John 6:35). “Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink,” (John 7:37). We can assure you that there is bread for the hungry and water for the thirsty!

The sad truth – the awful truth – is this: most people are not interested in Christ because they see no need of a sacrifice for their sins – no need of a Savior. They have been told that they can be saved of their own free will anytime they want to be and so rest in this false assurance. But the truth is that Jesus said, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day,” (John 6:44). This truth alone ought to cause sinners to fall on their faces before God and cry out for grace! But lost men and women will believe a lie before they will believe the truth.

God has provided what sinners need: spiritual life. And preachers stand on their heads, swallow goldfish and go to great lengths to entertain sinners claiming they are doing God's work. But no fleshly entertainments can cause a sinner to hunger and thirst after righteousness. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again,” (John 3: 6-7).
